Are you an old hand at bicycle holidays throughout Europe and in Italy, too? But we bet you have never slept in an authentic trullo, or at least not as charming as ours!
These beautiful trulli with swimming pool in the countryside are located between Locorotondo and Cisternino, on a stretch of the “Ciclovia dell’Acquedotto Pugliese” (Apulian Aqueduct Cycle Route), main bicycle touring path in Southern Italy that rides along the service track of the second longest and more-than-one-century old waterworks in Europe.
Deep in the peaceful countryside, the trulli are also a few steps away from very picturesque and lively towns: Cisternino, Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Alberobello.
The uniqueness of these trulli is due to their location: on the one side, a private access to the most scenic cycle route in Southern Italy, on the other side, the hub of an endless network of quiet country roads where to enjoy different itineraries and new discoveries every day.
The accommodation has been refurbished and fitted out respecting the ancient craft of the “trullari” (expert trulli-masons). Each apartment is equipped with bathroom, kitchen and with all comforts for a very special holiday in the Itria Valley.
The Trulli are the ideal solution for cycling and bicycle touring lovers – even for families!
Book a 7-night stay and we will provide you with bicycles and GPS devices with 10 uploaded tracks. Each bike-touring track rides along the most beautiful paths in the area, starting and finishing at the “Trulli di Figazzano”. You will discover the most authentic Itria Valley by bicycle: the beautiful countryside, dotted with trulli, drystone walls and olive trees, and some among the most beautiful towns in Italy.
- D1 – 26 KM
A short stop that will get you acquainted with the flowing countryside of the Itria Valley, and especially with its unmistakable landscape: the light, the colours, the scents and the sounds that will accompany you throughout your holiday and that will you will take home. Olive trees, vineyards of native varieties such as the delicious Verdeca, used to make a white wine that you just have to taste during your stay. And of course the trulli, the symbol of this area of Puglia all over the world.
The icing on the cake will be the ride along the cycle path of the Acquedotto Pugliese, the most important cycle route in the region that, as the name implies, runs along the maintenance path of our aqueduct that is more than one hundred years old and still stands strong.
- D2 – 24 KM
Another ride in the heart of the Itria Valley, just between the Selva di Fasano and the surrounding plateau, which you will be able to spot while enjoying a breath-taking view. An easy ride but with some light climbing so as not to get bored on your bike.
- D3 – 24 KM
A short and light route, but not less interesting. Actually, besides the pleasure of pedalling leisurely in the quiet country roads, you will face the most challenging climb of the itinerary to visit one of the tips of the triangle that frames the Itria Valley, which will repay your efforts: it is Martina Franca, with it’s elegant baroque centre where you can catch your breath before returning.
- D4 – 33 KM
Choose this route if you want to do a few more kilometres between the hills of the Itria Valley on quiet roads away from the city traffic and of course with the possibility of making numerous stops to admire the surrounding countryside and its typical landscape beyond the dry-stone walls, expertly assembled without any cement to close the fields and orchards scattered in the area. If you are lucky, from the branches that extend beyond the walls, you can collect and taste some delicious fruit: cherries, pears, almonds or figs, depending on the season.
- D5 – 39 KM
A longer loop this time – to allow you to visit two cities not to be missed if your are staying in the area. Starting with Locorotondo and its elegant ancient village at the top of the hill that allows you to enjoy a 360 ° view of the Itria Valley. After stopping in one of the many cafés and restaurants that keep the reputation of local food and wine high, you can get back in the saddle to ride up to Alberobello, a city that no longer needs an introduction. The world capital of the trulli, listed by UNESCO as one of the world heritage sites in 1996, has since become more and more known for the enchantment of its fairy-tale old town with its white pinnacles on top of the typical conical roofs of its unique houses.
- D6 – 28 KM
It is worthwhile to tackle the different climbs of this stage to visit the third point of the Itria Valley triangle: Cisternino. This ancient village perched on the southeast edge of the Murgia dei Trulli is appreciated not just for the characteristic architecture of its historic centre, with churches and medieval and Renaissance palaces, but also for its great food. The carnivores among you will fall in love with its “stove”, butcher shops where you can choose the meat that they will prepare right in front of you. Do not miss the famous “bombette” (meat rolls). But the vegetarians do not have to worry, the fruit and vegetables of this region will not disappoint you! And you do not have to feel guilty for eating a little more than you should have, since the nice ride back to the starting point is waiting for you.
- D7 – 46 KM
Today’s itinerary goes further south. Cycling on some of the most enchanting cycling routes in the area, you will arrive up to Ceglie Messapica, one of the most ancient cities of Puglia, whose history, as the name says, is linked to the people of the Messapi, but legend has it that it was founded by the mythical Pelasgians. Savor its ancient charm (but also its cuisine) by walking through its narrow streets and admiring the stately palaces and the ducal castle with Norman tower. Ceglie, in fact, is known as a city of art and a land of gastronomy. The Mediterranean cooking school is located here and the delicious “biscotto cegliese” is one of the Slow Food products of the region.
- D8 40 KM
A longer route to reach Martina Franca, for those of you who want to ride more, as well as visit the beautiful town famous for its Baroque architecture and its elegant cafes, or for those who have been enchanted the first time and want to see her again. To make it even more interesting the ride will use a section of the Ciclovia dell’Acquedotto.
- D9 60 KM
A route for those of you that are used to ride longer, but with the opportunity to catch your breath in one of the most scenic spots in the area: the Loggia di Pilato, a rise where you will see fearless paragliders fly over the countryside between Alberobello and Monopoli. Plan your arrival for lunch: we assure you that there is no better place to admire the splendid view than in the homonymous restaurant, while enjoying some well-deserved local specialties. However, try not to eat too much, if you want to enjoy the other enchanting panorama offered by this route: the trulli of Alberobello! Last stop for a snack or a walk in Locorotondo before returning to relaxing in the quiet of the countryside.
- D10 50 KM
Another tour for those who are not afraid of the hills of the Itria Valley, or for those who have chosen our pedal assisted e-bikes and will be able to face the climbs in absolute tranquillity. In both cases, the enchantment in front of the landscape will be the same: more trulli and dry stonewalls, olive groves and other orchards and in addition to the quiet country roads, the lanes of Alberobello and Locorotondo are waiting for you, two cities that no longer need any introduction!
