Puglia Road Bike Tour (Short)

Self-guided – 8 days

A Road Tour across Puglia, designed to let you discover our region with its variety of colours, landscapes and flavours. Your journey starts from Matera, the magical city of Sassi. From there on, you ride southwards, from the area of the ravines to that of the vineyards, from the famous crystal-clear beaches and baroque churches of the Salento to its more hidden little villages and dry-stone walls. Next up is the white town, Ostuni, between wide fields and thousand-year-old olive trees, followed by the Itria Valley with its “trulli” and “masserie”, until you get to Alberobello, UNESCO site, from where you will travel back home with a piece of Puglia in your heart. Are you ready for your ride?

1

DAY 1: Matera

Check in, briefing and bike fit in Matera.

Matera

DAY 2: Matera - Grottaglie

≅ 99 km

The first stage is characterized in the first part for running between the Murgia Materana and the Terra delle Gravine Regional Park, among wheat fields and wide panoramas, where the landscape is shaped by deep canyons. In the morning you will have the chance to visit the town of Laterza, famous for the tasty bakery products and the beautiful maiolica potteries.

Enjoy your ride passing through Castellaneta hilltop, the city of Rodolfo Valentino (the famous Hollywoodian star actor of the 20’s) to then take the former railways cycling path on the panoramical bridges (pounded gravel surface, easy going). After that the itinerary crosses the tiny village of Palagianello to then rise up till Mottola, where we recommend a deserved rest (nice historical town where eating something).

Getting back on the saddle, you’ll soon pedal into the flourishing oak woods of Crispiano surroundings, an area named of the “100 masserie” (a typical fortified farmhouse, built even centuries ago) to finally reach Grottaglie, your overnight place, renowned for the town handmade ceramics production.

DAY 3: Grottaglie - Gallipoli

≅ 108 km

Today the itinerary moves towards the “Murge Tarantine” plateau, in the east side of the province of Taranto. Cycling through a peaceful countryside you will cross some little villages such as Monteparano with its massive fortified Castello d’Alaya and the tall watchtower,  Roccaforzata on the top of Serra Sant’Elia (the highest hill of the area), to finally go down till Faggiano.

Then the itinerary flows till reaching the coastal side at the small touristic harbor of Campomarino, a vivid place during the high season. Pedaling Southern direction, you will pass the sea district of San Pietro in Bevagna, very popular among the locals for its amazing  crystal-clear beaches where are also kept some sarcophagus of the Roman age (underwater, some meters far from the shoreline, possible to do snorkeling to explore the area). Take your time to enjoy a coffee or a snack before getting again on saddle.

The route continues passing by the salt basin of the Natural Reserve “Salina dei Monaci” where salt was once produced; now it is a nature reserve where between spring and early fall stupendous flamingos find shelter. Leaving the sandy path, you proceed to the mighty Torre Colimena, a splendid example of a 16th-century watchtower.

Left the tower and took again the main road, the route continues straight on to Porto Cesareo, a characteristic harbor with a fish market and some seaside tavernas, as well as the perfect place for lunch. After this village, you pedal till the panoramic promontory of Porto Selvaggio to then head down to the bays of Santa Caterina and Santa Maria al Bagno, where will be possible to stop for a swim and a break.

Last 15 kilometers flow quickly to Gallipoli, known as the “Pearl of the Ionian Sea”, a town with an ancient foundation that dates back before the greeks. Highly suggested a fish dinner here 😉

DAY 4: Gallipoli - Otranto

≅ 105 km

Head towards Santa Maria di Leuca, better known as “Finis Terrae”. Take a breath, and gaze at the far end of Italy! Now ride along the Adriatic coast, and make sure to have a stop at Zinzulusa cave or Porto Badisco before finally reaching Otranto. Discover the secrets of the mosaics in the Medieval Cathedral, and admire the sunset on the easternmost city of Italy.

DAY 5: Otranto - Lecce

≅ 85 km

Today’s bike ride winds through the “Grecìa Salentina“, between ancient menhirs and “pagliare”, typical country buildings used by farmers. Then you will go towards the coast, dotted with numerous 16th century watchtowers and natural caves, among which the wonderful “Grotta della Poesia” stands out. You will finally arrive in Lecce: relax in the narrow streets of the old town centre sipping a refreshing “leccese” coffee, among baroque churches and palaces, and the sparkling of stone.

DAY 6: Lecce - Brindisi

≅ 88 km

This morning you leave the baroque heart of Lecce, saying goodbye definitively to the Salento area, for another simple day almost completely flat. The ruote will take you inland towards Salice Salentino and Guagnano, renowned for the production of red wines such as Negroamaro and Salice (in fact, you often cycle alongside rows of native vineyards). The itinerary keeps on flat roads, passing the center of Squinzano and the countryside surrounded by olive groves, to then reach the coast in the small center of Casalabate, where there is a quiet marina, holiday homes and some bars open during the summer. After passing the ancient watchtower, the route bends again to the hinterland, in the direction of San Pietro Vernotico, a small village with an agricultural vocation but with an authentic atmosphere, where we recommend a lunch stop near the central Piazza del Popolo. From this moment about 20 kilometers separate you from the vivid center of Brindisi, a strategic outpost since the Greek period, a Roman port of enormous value and today an expanding tourist centre, as well as a minor seat of the arsenal of the Italian navy.

For sunset have a stroll at the refined seafront, admiring the monumental staircase that marks the end of the ancient Roman Via Appia-Traiana and, why not, enjoying a pre-dinner drink.

Lecce – Guagnano – Casalabate – Brindisi

DAY 7: Brindisi - Alberobello

≅ 93 km

Left the city you proceed along the coastal route, heading northwards up to Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve, a vast area interested by lagoon, woods and Mediterranean scrub from which the emblematic medieval fortified tower stands out. After exploring the gravel paths of the reserve (easy going), the route continues towards the residential center of Specchiolla where, in summer, we suggest a coffee stop at one of the numerous bars on the seafront (in the low season you can continue till the next stop).

Leaving the coast, you head inland following the quiet municipal roads that branch off among the mighty monumental olive trees up to Carovigno hamlet. A lively climb (steep but short) marks the entrance to the historic center where we suggest a glance at the singular Renaissance balcony of the Dentice Frasso Castle. Others undulating 10 km divide you from the “White Lady”, the hilltop town of Ostuni, which with its whiteness and beauty marks the southern border of the lush Valle d’Itria. Here it’s highly recommend a stroll in the old town (if you use cycling shoes, bring your cleats covers, because the town has many steep alleys).

Took again the bike, you will soon pedal the rolling countryside of the Valle d’Itria, a really characteristic landscape, lined by dry-stone walls and dotted with “trulli”, the conical–shaped roof houses, symbols of Puglia. All around olive groves, almond and cherry trees, vineyards and vegetable gardens. In this last part of the day, the itinerary let you to explore the most representative towns of this area such as: Cisternino, with its medieval architecture and the grilled specialties; Locorotondo, with its renowned circular plan and the panoramic walk over the valley and finally Alberobello, the UNESCO site and world capital of Trulli, where you will spend the night.
